Oak Lake Royal Canadian Legion Branch No.79

History

On July 25, 1924 a meeting of World War I Veterans was held for the purpose of forming a local Returned Soldiers Association.  This Association held a Memorial Service at the cemetary every summer, and  a Remembrance Day Service every November 11, and looked after the general welfare of Veterans and their families until a local branch of the Canadian Legion of the British Empire Service League was formed.  It was called Oak Lake Branch No.79 and was part of the Manitoba and North West Ontario Command.  The first Legion Hall was a two-room building on Main Street (North Railway) which was lost to fire in 1968.  On September 1970 the first meeting was held at the present Legion Hall which had been purchased and moved into Oak Lake from Bellview.
